Quick Hello

Asylum is over the halfway finished mark! ;)

Of course, that doesn't mean it's nearly finished, just that first draft. I'll go over it and clean it up once I've written it, edit, add, delete...it's a long process before it even gets sent in to the publisher. But I am hurrying. I'm so anxious to get it written while Sanctuary is still hot.

I've gone back to school as well, and that takes up a lot of time. I have five classes to take for the summer semester, which is only a couple of months, so every day is studying and quizzes and reading and memorization and learning! I am happy to say that I got an 'A' on my first medical terminology test :)

Hi Everyone!

I've been so busy working on the Cassidy Hunter site that I've been neglecting this one.

To catch you up, I'm writing Sanctuary's sequel, Asylum. Strange Familiar has been sent in and I should get either an acceptance or a rejection for that one soon. I'll let you know as soon as I do.

I've also been neglecting Prisoner of Ghor so that I could write Asylum, but I'll pick it back up once I have time.

Sanctuary remains the number one bestseller at Loose Id, so far. Yay! I'm thrilled that it's doing so well.

I've also signed back up for school, so I'll be taking five classes this summer semester. Sigh. Why oh why did I take on so much? I haven't left myself much time to write! ;)

I am so excited to get to review this story. I love this author who also writes under the name of Jane E. Jones.

So, let me begin at the beginning, because this has to be one of the best opening lines ever,

Kimberlyn’s guilt warred with her pleasure. It was difficult to be good when the need grew inside her like a sharp-edged mountain, until her fight was as ineffectual as a fist against an oak tree.

Need I say anything about her gift for description? Also, Ms. Hunter has this ability to glide flawlessly from hot, sizzling sex scenes to description that reads like poetry and back again.

And, if you want fantasy, well imagine yourself a female werewolf tied down and ravished by three men at once in the woods under the moon… And, again I am still just in the opening paragraphs here!

But, Ms. Hunter continues on. The imagery, the scorching sex scenes, the plot building, multiple conflicts…and ahhh…I had that war going on to rush to find out what happens and to take it slow to appreciate all of the details that get you there.

With every bit of passion, every moment of happiness the reader gets, it then gets swept up in the rising conflict until your eyes are reading furiously, your heart beating as if you too can feel the emotions of the wolves, as if as the reader I was linked to them – it is a magical reading experience.

The created intricacies of the pack are nothing short of genius in lending themselves to the storyline, the conflict, the emotions and eventually the resolution. And, for the ending…well, you will just have to read it to see. This book is an experience not to be missed.

Strange Familiar

As you can see from the progress meter on Strange Familiar, I'm getting a lot closer to the end. I have so much to clean up, to edit out, and add in, but once I reach the ending, the rest is relatively quick and easy. After I send it in and it gets accepted, more work.

Strange Familiar has been a bit difficult for me because with everything that happened, my mind was not on writing. I was away from Strange Familiar for a long time, and that distance means that I was no longer in the book's 'head'. I had to get that back, and get the enthusiasm back for this book.

I have to get the fun back in this story. If you're not feeling a book, the readers will know it. What a writer feels comes through in her words. Trying to force the story before I was ready to come back to it was not working.

Strange Familiar is taking its time getting to the finish line, but it is getting there, thank goodness. I'm ready to move on to the next one.

Finishing Edits

Home Again...

Okay, so I'm back online again. Amber stayed out of the hospital for a little while, but on the day after Thanksgiving, was admitted back into ICU. We just got out today. I'm hoping that this time we'll stay out. Poor kid is so bruised and tired from all the sticks and IVs and shots. Every single day she was stuck multiple times, and not only that but her veins wouldn't stand up to all the meds going into them, and kept blowing. So several IV changes later, we're home. Happy to be here, let me tell ya!

I just have to keep a close watch on her, limit company that comes around-like I didn't do that already-and keep my fingers crossed that she'll stay healthy.

As far as publishing news, everything has been put on a back burner. I didn't finish NaNo, of course, and since we've been in the hospital so much, don't even know what's been going on online.

Strange Familiar, my NaNoWriMo book, is probably not going to be finished by the end of November. I fell so far behind while Amber was in the hospital, and yesterday's top to bottom house cleaning and today's cooking and hosting Thanksgiving dinner kept me from writing. But there is always next year:)

Welp, I think I'll go have a piece of pie. Pumpkin, this time. Or maybe some banana pudding...

Back Online

I've been in the ICU with my daughter for awhile, and wanted to let everybody know we're finally home! She's doing pretty well, still not great, but better. They wouldn't have sent us home otherwise :)

I fell behind-way behind-on NaNo, but I'm not worried. If I catch up, I do. If not, then I still have a book that started with NaNo and will end up in the hands of my editor. I just may not finish it before NaNo ends.

There was an email waiting for me from Ellora's Cave. The book I subbed to them has passed the initial editor and is being given to an acquiring editor. So we'll see. If they take it, I'll be thrilled:)

To NaNo or not to NaNo?

A couple of days before it starts, and I still haven't decided whether or not to give it a go this year. I'm hesitant because so much is going on.

I've opened a shop on etsy and am making different things every day, I'm still not finished with Keeping Kai, I hope to get an acceptance and edits for The Room in mid-November, and also we've been doing edits on Sanctuary, with The Shifter's Heart to follow.

I was informed that the trial is being postponed until January or February, so that, in a way, is good news. On the one hand, having such a hideous thing going on during the holidays, again, is just too hard. But on the other hand, another delay is so discouraging. I want it to be over with.

Also, preparing for Thanksgiving is time consuming. So with all this going on, to say nothing of family stuff, NaNo might just be too much for me to take on this year.

But come the first, I might be writing that NaNo book ;)

I do love the structure, the discipline, and the 50000 word book finished in one month!

But...I still just haven't decided!

How about you guys? Any of you doing NaNo this year?

Shiloh Walker on piracy

Looking for free Shiloh Walker ebooks?

Well, with the exception of this one or those given (legally) away in contests, you're not going to find any free ones.

Piracy comes with costs... to the publisher, to the author, and yes, to the reader. it costs you books. Want to know how? Read on.

When you look for 'free Shiloh Walker ebooks' and end up on a torrent site or a filesharing site, the books you find aren't really free-they cost me. The ones you find will be illegal, unauthorized copies. They are unauthorized and they are illegal. It's copyright infringement.

Unsure on what constitutes copyright infringement? Here's the bottom line. I own the books I write. I created them. I contract with publishers who then pay me to release to books for readers to read. Readers buy the one copy and they are entitled to do whatever they want...with that one copy. But when you uploaded onto a filesharing site or a torrent site-it's no longer one copy. You have made copies-they are unauthorized copies. That is illegal. If you don't believe me...here's what the FBI has to say about copyrighted works:

"Warning: The unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement, including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the FBI and is punishable by up to 5 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000."

So maybe now you're thinking... "I don't upload to filesharing sites. I just download. Whoever uploaded them is the one in trouble." Wrong. Did you hear about the woman who was fined $1.9 million because she downloaded roughly 20 songs?

The US Copyright Office says:

"Uploading or downloading works protected by copyright without the authority of the copyright owner is an infringement of the copyright owner's exclusive rights of reproduction and/or distribution. Anyone found to have infringed a copyrighted work may be liable for statutory damages up to $30,000 for each work infringed and, if willful infringement is proven by the copyright owner, that amount may be increased up to $150,000 for each work infringed."

By placing one of my books on a filesharing site, you're breaking the law. You do not have my authorization, and I can't give it because it violates my contract. I can't give it, because if I give my work away for free, how do I meet my responsibilities?

Now maybe you're thinking..."well, ya know... your responsibilities aren't my problem."

No...they aren't. They are mine and I'm just fine with that. However, when you pirate my work, whether you realize it or not, you're contributing to a problem I've been dealing with, and if you enjoy my work? It does affect you.

How?

Writing is my job. It is how I pay for my obligations, it's how I provide for my family...and ironically, it's what allows me to continue to write. Writing isn't free. I spent thousands every year on books, research, contests, promotional needs, and health issues that I've developed because of writing. If I don't make money writing, I won't continue to write.

Now I don't see me hanging up my writer's hat any time soon. But... I have ended a series. The deciding factor were money and piracy. The Mythe series is pretty much dead. I have no plans at this point to continue it. If you want more detail, follow the link. But the series is pretty much over and will remain unfinished.

So if you liked that series and you pirate books, you added to that problem and you helped bring about this decision.

What about the Hunters? The vamp/shifter series is certainly my most popular series. No, I'm not ending that one any time soon. But piracy played into a decision that is going to cost readers books.

My writing is a business and I have to treat it as such. I came to the decision that I should place my work where it's going to be the biggest benefit to my career. I decided the best place for the Hunters books was Berkley, one of my mainstream publishers. Issues with piracy was one of the deciding factors and because of those issues, I switched the Hunter books to my mainstream publisher. Here's where it affects readers: With my epubs, I could put out 2-4 Hunter books a year. With my mainstream publisher, the plan is one a year, possibly two after I wrap up the Veil series. Mainstream publishers require longer story lengths, so the shorter ideas I had will remain unwritten unless I can figure out a way to either lengthen the story or combine them for a single author anthology. Bottom line? Readers are getting fewer Hunter books. It sucks-it sucks for me, and it sucks for those who enjoy my books enough to either buy them or check them out from the library...through those legal channels. If it sucks for the pirates, well, sorry, but I couldn't care less. Those pirates are the main reason I made that decision.

This is also the reason I don't have as many ebooks releasing from my epubs. I'm focusing of my efforts on where it has the most benefits for my career, which is my mainstream publishers. Adds up to fewer books, because I don't have releases as often through my mainstream publishers.

Now please, don't had me any of the excuses pirates just love to hand out. If you didn't realize it was wrong, at this point, you do. With all do respect, I ask you, please, stop. You're hurting authors, which ironically means you're also shooting yourself in the foot. If you have any respect at all for writers, don't pirate. If you do pirate, whatever respect you claim to have is empty.

Those who 'know' it's wrong but don't care...or those who hand out the excuses? Don't want to hear them, thanks. I've heard them.

#1 Excuse- But most of us who pirate turn around and buy the book anyway.

If this was true, I would have hit the big bestseller lists, I would have paid off all of my debts and I would have already have my kids' college funds nicely padded. Sorry. It's not true. I keep track of how many times get downloaded and like I mentioned before, some of them have been pirated more than they have sold, so there's no way the majority of pirates turn around and buy the book. I've seen the numbers-I know how many books I sell and I've seen how many get pirated. Pirates can claim that line all they want, but I've seen the numbers. The numbers trump those claims.

#2 Excuse- But I don't have the money to buy it and I love to read.

I can sympathize with not having the money and loving to read. More than you know. I grew up dirt-poor. I got my books by riding 15 miles roundtrip every week to the local library on a secondhand bike somebody gave me. I checked out 10 books, loaded them into my backpack and then went back home, read them and returned them. I had a paper route that gave me a little bit of cash so that one or twice a month, I could go buy one or two new paperbacks. I understand not having money. But as my responsibilities aren't your problem, your lack of money isn't my problem. There are libraries. There are free, legal reads on the web. Baen has a number of free ebooks on their site. Samhain has some free reads. On a regular basis, the Sony ebook store has free reads and you don't need a Sony reader to read them. Plenty of authors have free promo reads on their sites, like the one I listed above. So you can find free, legal reads, if you look.

#3 Excuse-But the books are in English and I don't read English well. The only way I can read them is if I download one of the pirated translations.

You know what? I can understand that, too. But you're still breaking the law. You're breaking US law and if you're not a US citizen, you're breaking the copyright laws of your country-just about every country has laws in place to protect copyright. As a non-English speaker, you could possibly help bring about a change that would make the books available in your language, in your country and in a way that would benefit other readers and the author. Find a publisher that publishes in your language. Email them. Get your friends to do the same. Explain you're looking for more books by certain authors. Foreign publishers often contract with English publishers to obtain foreign rights translations-this would end up getting the book legally to your country and it's also in a way that benefits the writer and the publisher, and believe it or not, when the writer and the publisher benefit, that's a good thing for readers, because the publishers will want to expand and they'll likely make more books available. Plus, those translations will be professional translations.

#4 Excuse-But everybody does it.

This is the weakest, lamest excuse. Doing something because everybody else does it? Weak. Doing the right thing takes character. It takes strength. Doing something just because all your friends do it? That's weak...that's easy.

#5 Excuse-But the authors don't really care.

You're wrong. We do. You're taking something you have no right to. If we hadn't created the works, they wouldn't exist. That gives us legal rights to those works and when you trample on them, we care-every bit as much as you would care if somebody trampled all over your legal rights.

#6 Excuse-But the authors don't need the money.

This is yet another crock-

Point #1-I do need the money. Frankly, if I didn't need the money, I wouldn't bust my butt to put out books as often as I do-I write a pace that has put so much stress on my hands and wrists, as I mentioned, I'm facing yet another surgery. I maintain this pace because at this point, my career demands it and I need my career to provide for my kids. Since you aren't me, you can't make the decision if I need the money or not.

Point #2-It doesn't matter if the author needs the money-they are legally entitled to it. They created the work. They are entitled to the compensation. But you are not legally entitled to take whatever you want.

#7 Excuse-But piracy doesn't really hurt the authors.

You're wrong. You know what determines whether or not an author gets a contract renewed with the publisher? Sales. So every sale counts. (And if you're thinking the bestsellers are pretty much guaranteed new contracts...see excuse #6.) For newer authors and or those of us who haven't yet made it big, every single sale is crucial. Especially now. Publishers are tightening their belts and authors who don't sell enough don't get renewed contracts. Ironically enough, a couple of authors I've seen mentioned by pirates... "When is her next book coming out..." I can tell you a couple of them didn't get their contracts renewed. And those who pirated instead of buying?

You contributed to that.

Also-sales are lost to piracy. Plain and simple. When sales are lost, money is lost. One thing that publishers do when money is lost? Jack up prices. Now I don't if any publisher has raised prices just because of piracy, but prices do go up. Since money is lost to piracy, it's entirely possible that piracy is one of the deciding factors. So other readers are paying for your pirating. Not very nice on your part.

#8 Excuse-But writers write to get read. They should just be grateful people read them.

You know what? When you legally buy/checkout/etc my books-whether you love them or hate them-I am grateful. My career wouldn't be where it is if it wasn't for those readers. But if you're illegally downloading my work, you didn't contribute to my career, and I'm not in the least bit grateful to you. I'm grateful to those who buy me in stores, those who request me in libraries. I'm not grateful to pirates.

If you're on the ones buying to 'share' them on filesharing/torrent sites-sorry, not grateful to you, either. Maybe you bought, but you're contributing to the problem. Writers don't write just to get read. If we did that, we wouldn't go through the hard-work of haggling contracts, dealing with edits, paying for promo, maintaining websites, maintaining a web presence, buying bookmarks, paying for research material, or writing ourselves in nerve damage that results in surgery.

We write because it is our job.

I'm a writer and I love it when people love my work, but my end reward isn't having people love my work-my end reward is knowing that I'm able to use this talent in a way that provides for my family. That is my reward, and when you pirate, I don't get it, so spare me...I shouldn't be grateful for those who pirate my work. I'm grateful to those who have the decency and the respect to pay for my work, or request it from libraries, etc, etc.

#9 Ebooks cost less to produce, so they shouldn't cost so much, and if they were cheaper, I'd buy.

Ebooks cost less in some ways. Yes. But there are still costs. The editors have to be paid. The writers have to be paid. The cover artists have to paid. The websites must be maintained. There are formatting costs. There are costs associated with getting books to legit e-tailers like the Sony store and Amazon's Kindle store.

Plus, the publisher has to make a profit.

If writers, editors, cover artists, publishers, don't make money...why should they continue to do it? Writing might be an art, but getting your work published requires a writer to think about it like a business. If that line of thinking bothers you, then by all means, go find websites where people put their work up for free. They can just write for the sake of art. But if I wrote for the sake of art alone, I wouldn't be able to provide for my family. Sorry, they are more important than writing for the sake of 'art'.

#10 Writers are all rich. Readers are broke. We're just trying to help them out.

I'd like to know what Utopia you live in, where are all writers are rich. Are some? Yes. But you know what? They busted the butts off to get that way and they earned it.

Now, I hate to burst your bubble, but not all writers are rich. Matter of fact, I can count on one hand how many I know (as in having met them) who could be called rich. Most of us? We're just working stiffs. Yep...working stiffs. Most of us don't drive new, pricy sports cars or luxury SUVS. My car is five years old and I bought it used. My husband? His car is close to 10 years old, and he bought it used. We don't live in some designer home with thousands of square feet, we don't go shopping for designer clothes on Rodeo Drive and we don't take luxury vacations that cost more than some cars. Most writers have the same bills you have, most writers have to mess with mortgages and quite a few of us have to shell out thousands a year for health care, because we're self-employed.

We're not rich so if you've got some Robin-Hood complex going, you're deluding yourself. More likely, you're just using it as an excuse to do what you want and screw those you hurt.

Piracy irritates me. It depresses me. Contrary to what some people think, sad and depressed isn't always all that conducive to creativity. When I'm in that state of mind, I don't write well. While I'm usually able to compartmentalize, I don't always do it-suppressing it just makes it worse so from time to time, I let it out, and when I'm doing that? I'm not writing. Which means...fewer books.

Piracy irritates me. I know the value of hard work and I respect it. People are not entitled to take just whatever they want, because other people end up paying for it and I have too much respect for others to take what I have no right to. Some pirates seem to want authors to 'respect' them, but respect is a two way street. You can't expect it from us unless you're willing to give it, and you can't respect us when you're trampling all over a writer's legal rights.

Piracy irritates me. I spent hours dealing with pirates. Hours. Those are hours that could be spent writing.

And I'm not the only author who does this. Many, many authors are vigilant about this and unless they can afford to have an assistant deal with it, the author is the one doing it. So while the author is dealing with pirates, they aren't writing.

When writers have to set time aside from writing to deal with pirates, they aren't writing. When a writer doesn't get contracts renewed because of flat sales, she doesn't have a new book coming out. If you pirated instead of buying, you contributed to that.

In the long run, one thing that piracy costs you? More books.

Puppy Love by Jane E. Jones

This is one witty, hilarious, and fun short story! The main character, Sarah, has a missing dog named Casper Salt. The storyline is about just how far Sarah will go to recover her beloved dog. I loved the descriptions Sarah gave to her neighbors…one was “all kinds of crazy” (when I read that, I figured Sarah lived in MY neighborhood!), and another was described as a “hunky muffin” (okay, so maybe she doesn’t live in my neighborhood!). Anyway, I laughed out loud reading this one. I caught myself smiling and laughing throughout the entire short story. My only complaint is…it’s too short–I want MORE of a good thing. Loved it Jane. Please let there be a sequel. The readers will relate the main character to several of their friends…and maybe even themselves. If you are a dog lover…or any kind of pet lover…you will understand the lengths you would go to get your much loved pet back.

Because I’d like this story to continue on and on…I give this short read 4 cocktails!

Happy 4th, everyone!

It's a bit cloudy and rainy here today. A good day to write:)

I'm nearing the ending of Sanctuary, and am anxious to finish it because I have two new story ideas that I'm really excited to write. I'll have to decide which one to start when Sanctuary is finished, and which one will have to wait. ;)

I used to write two or three or even four mss at once, but these days I force myself to finish one before I even think about starting another! And let me tell you, it's not easy.

Probably I'll start on the contemporary...or should I make it a western?

Anyway, off to finish up Sanctuary. :)

Dentists and Flowers

Yesterday I visited the dentist because a filling came out. I ended up drilled, filled, and crowned:) Last night was not a restful night as I took nothing but Tylenol and the pain was a bit big for Tylenol. Today is much better, thanks in part to an awesome and very sweet guy named Steve having flowers delivered to my door this morning! :)

"You have to watch Jane’s Beauty’s Beast video. Wow! You’ll see what I mean!

This story broke my heart as I read of Holly’s life growing up. The things her mother said to her as a child were so heartless…so uncaring. When Holly wasn’t working to help support her mother and sisters, she spent time in the woods…the woods just outside of the Beast’s castle. She watched him, he was always alone…just like her.

One day while Holly is sitting in the middle of the woods at peace watching the animals play, she meets the most handsome man she has ever seen. He is tall, brown haired and Holly thinks his face had “surely been kissed by the gods.” I happen to love that line and will most likely start using it when I see a really cute guy! Ristan speaks to her and when she asks him why he is in the woods, he tells her he is in search of his true love. This starts their relationship, Ristan wants to know everything about her and she him. They start meeting in the woods and soon fall in love–she is finally happy.

The story gets very hot and steamy!

Then Alexavier Verrada wants Holly…and her life changes. So drastically that you have to read the book to fully grasp it. I always put myself into the leading character’s role. I feel what they feel and I have to say…parts of this story are tear jerkers, parts fill you heart with love, other parts are erotic, hot, hot, hot, and some parts twist and turn to keep you fully interested and wanting to see what’s going to happen next with the characters (there is a lot more to this story and I don’t want to give too much away!). It’s an emotional roller coaster for Holly and you’ll love taking the ride with her!

This is a quick read…only 59 pages (piece of cake)–which I read nonstop! There is a great moral to this story. Because you will want to read this erotic story with its twists and turns to the very end, I give this story 4 cocktails!"

I found this to be such a charming tale that Ms. Jones wrote. The author tells the story of how two people, who were next door neighbors, didn’t hit it off very well from their first encounter together.

Sarah loves her dog, Casper Salt, very much and wants nothing to happen to him. Seeing how Michael took so well to the dog the first time he saw him and even picked him up to pet him, Sarah becomes neurotically overprotective of her precious dog. Unfortunately though, it was not as protective as she should have been because now Casper Salt is missing. Without even putting some serious thought into where the dog might be, Sarah immediately accuses Michael of stealing her beloved four legged friend.

If matters weren’t bad enough this far, when Michael leaves his house one night, Sarah sets out on a mission to break into his house to find and rescue Casper Salt. Little does she know the crazy kind of chaos she is going to cause by acting out her foolish scheme.

Ms. Jones did a wonderful job of entertaining me with Sarah’s wild antics. I immediately fell in love with Michael and felt terrible when Sarah accused him of being the dognapper just because he got along so well with Casper Salt. The author sprinkled humor throughout her story that made me laugh out loud. I thoroughly enjoyed this lighthearted story and I would definitely recommend it for others to read. Ms. Jones' story will not disappoint you!

Annie Red faces a situation that could put her life in great jeopardy, especially since her brother-in-law is the sheriff. But it seems that her emotions are ruling her more than her common sense. Since she is a widow now, her life has changed drastically and she is now realizing her attraction that she is holding for Johnny Curtis, the sexy and dangerous looking long-haired drifter, is very real.

While he takes shelter in her shed she tries her best to hide his tracks in the dirt that he left behind. She knows falling for him is too dangerous because of what the town people are accusing him of, but she has a burning desire to be with him nonetheless.

Does Annie risk everything to be with Johnny, even for just one time? Does her brother-in-law find out where Johnny is hiding? Did Johnny really commit the crime he is being accused of?

Ms. Jones pens a fast-paced story with some powerful scenes that will make your heart skip a beat. The storyline is unique and has such emotionally tense filled moments packed throughout its few pages. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and wished it was much longer. You mustn’t pass this one up!

An Excerpt from Cassidy Hunter's Sanctuary

The shift wasn't easy. She'd denied it for so long. Because she'd restrained herself to only changing when she had no choice, each lengthening of bone, each twisting of sinew and stretching of skin was an agony.

She tried to anticipate each step and be ready for it, but the pain clouded her mind and soon she writhed on the ground, moaning.

But at last, it ended. The wolf got to its feet and stood for a moment, head low, as the hurt faded. She looked up at the world, a world with muted colors and scents so heady and strong she could have taken a bite of it.

She ran through the woods, freed from the restraints of big-city society. Heady freedom brought with it a loosening of caution, and Kimberlyn the wolf cavorted like an innocent pup who'd long been caged.

Pausing to drink from a cold, crystal clear stream, she stared at her reflection. Water dripped from her muzzle, and golden eyes shone, mysterious and untamed. White face surrounded with bluish grays, her coloring and beauty fascinated her.

She was such a girl. She lowered her mouth to the water, drinking her fill. Her stomach growled, and her thoughts turned toward the wild bounty the woods offered a hungry wolf.

Then her attention was caught by something much more important than her stomach—a long, musical wolf howl that undulated through the quiet night air like the call of a siren to a hapless sailor.

She stood frozen, unable to so much as breathe. Wolves. There were wolves in these woods. The howl was cut off abruptly.

She couldn't resist. She had to follow that howl. If there were wolves here, and she'd heard one with her own ears, she had to find them. Or it. She trotted toward the sound.

In three minutes, she heard them: hushed noises and sharp yips of unease. Whines of pain. Slinking forward, she finally saw them.

A silver-washed clearing held at least twelve wolves gathered around what appeared to be a fallen pack member. The dead or dying wolf was an enormous dark shadow on the moon-drenched ground.

Even as she watched, a black stain spread from under the huge, shaggy wolf's body. He'd been injured, severely injured, and Kimberlyn frowned. Why did his pack not heal him?

But it was difficult for her to concentrate on one fallen wolf when, for the first time in her life, she had stumbled upon an entire group of her own kind. Werewolves.

She couldn't run to them, as much as she wanted to. She didn't belong to this pack. For all she knew, they would tear her to bits as soon as they saw her.

Anger and sorrow arose from the pack like poisonous vapors, rising into the night air on wings of fear. Why they didn't heal their friend puzzled her, but she couldn't go charging into their midst and demand they help him. They must have their reasons. It wasn't her business. Not yet.

Carefully she slid back into the trees. They were here. It was enough for now.

Then she froze as one of the wolves looked her way, lifted his nose, and sniffed the air. His growl, when it came, chilled her blood. The others looked in her direction as well, hackles rising, growls weaving together in a terrifying song. They knew she was there.

She could run, or she could stand and fight. Not that these were good choices. If she outran the wolves, by some unlikely chance, they would not only know where she lived but also would see her as an encroaching enemy, and she'd never be safe in the woods.

If she stood and fought…well, one wolf against an entire pack never bode well for the loner.

They were upon her before she could decide, thus deciding for her. She rose to her full height, but despite the fact that she was huge, most of these wolves were even larger, especially the males. They gathered around her in a large circle, snarling and growling deep, dark warnings. Their voices vibrated along her skin, raising her soft fur to stand stiff and bristly on her neck.

Three of the wolves had shifted halfway between the human and the wolf, and Kimberlyn was fascinated. In her limited experience, there was no halfway. She had so much to learn.

“Who are you?” asked one of the half-shifted wolves.

She couldn't talk. Of course he knew that. Hesitating, she began to change to human form. Less painful and time consuming than the shift to wolf, she managed to not embarrass herself too much as she completed the change on her knees, naked and shivering before them. The adrenaline rush kept the pain and exhaustion from overtaking her, but she'd feel it later. If she managed to make it out of this alive.

“Kimberlyn from California,” she said, her voice coming out awkward and rumbling. “I'm new here. I mean you no harm.”

“Who do you belong to?” A dark male's eyes narrowed suspiciously, his lips drawn back to show sharp, lethal incisors.

“I have no pack.”

The pack drew in closer still, their circle tightening slowly. One of the half-shifted wolves walked close to her, close enough to touch. His body was covered with a fine fur, and claws shot from his fingers and toes. His face was caught in the half change and could in no way be described as beautiful. He stood on two feet and bared his belly, his cock half-erect and enormous, bobbing as he walked.

She stood silent, understanding they could smell her fear, unable to do anything to halt it. The half-shifted wolf didn't touch her but pushed his face close to her, sniffing.

“You smell good,” he said. He closed the couple of inches between them and dug his hands into her back, thrusting his cock into her side.

She snarled and struck out at him before she thought of the consequences. He squealed when her fist smacked his nose, his voice more surprise than pain. His backhand burned against her cheek, numbing half her face. She landed in an ignoble heap but leaped up immediately, rage and a big dose of fear clouding her vision.

Before she could reach him, she was jerked around. One of the wolves had shifted back to human form and lifted her against the tree with a hand to her throat. She gagged and kicked at him, her fingernails digging into his arm.

“I'll let go of you if you calm your ass down,” he said, staring up at her. Muscles bulged as he held her up, but no strain showed on his face.

“Yes,” she whispered. Her voice rasped like rusty nails, burning a trail of white-hot pain through her throat.

“Elijah! He's shifting! Hurry…”

He loosened his grip on her throat. “Fuck! Don't let him shift, for God's sake.” He turned back to face her as he let her slide down the tree, his cold eyes leaving no doubt he meant every word he said. “Stay by my side. Do not try to run, or I will hunt you down and kill you. Are we clear?”

She nodded, barely. He took his hand away. “Follow me. Try to run and you will be stopped.”

Every deep, shuddering breath sent waves of pain through her throat. If she could shift, the pain would go away, and her throat would begin to heal. But she couldn't take the time.

She ran with Elijah, the other wolves following. If Elijah wasn't the alpha, God only knew what their leader was like. Maybe that's why they didn't heal him. And too bad for her she couldn't heal herself. But then, she couldn't very well lick her own throat.

The wolf was lying in the same position, only now his body was returning to its human form. If that happened, his wounds would kill him. Even as a wolf, he would have trouble healing.

“What happened to him?” she whispered, her throat cramping. “Is he your alpha?” But she knew he was. His body, as hurt as it was, screamed power. It floated around him like a cloud of steel, an aura of strength that was unmistakable.

“A sleuth of bears,” Elijah said, then ignored her as he bent to the pack leader. A gray wolf, huge and sleek, sat at the alpha's side, his yellow eyes on Kimberlyn. Then he licked the leader's cheek.

“He's going to die,” Elijah said, and there were moans and gasps at his declaration. The gray wolf lifted his nose toward the sky and howled, a sound of grief and mourning that sent shivers down Kimberlyn's spine.

“Why don't you heal him?” she asked, becoming angry despite herself.

Elijah's face snapped toward her and he growled. “He is beyond help, bitch. Do you think we would not help him if we could?”

“I don't understand. I've seen no attempts to help him.”

Elijah jumped to his feet, rage in his eyes, death in his face.

“Let me heal him,” she said.

“He cannot be healed,” Elijah roared, reaching for her.

She danced away from him. You dumb fuck, of course he can be healed. “I can heal him, if you really want him alive.” There was challenge in her voice. She'd once brought back a dog who had been hit by a car, his insides and bones mixing together in a mealy mess. What she couldn't understand was why this man's pack stood around him, doing nothing at all. It made no sense. A quiet thought grew into a scream, and she narrowed her gaze, thinking.

What if they couldn't heal? What if they didn't know how or didn't possess the ability? She didn't ask them. “I have to shift before I can heal him.”

The wolves closed in like a tightening vice, and Elijah stared at her with grim, cold eyes. “If you think to try to harm him or any of us, you will be killed before you can move.”

She raised an eyebrow but nodded. He was dying, but they worried about her finishing the job. Idiots.

The gray wolf at the leader's side watched her, torment and fear in every line of his body. He gave an urgent yip that seemed to say, Hurry up, girl. If you can do something, do it!

She hated for anyone to see her agonized shift but had little choice. Elijah the bodyguard wasn't going to let her go change in the bushes. The wolves watched her in complete silence with varying degrees of disbelief and empathetic grimaces.

“God, girl. What the hell?” Elijah stretched a hand toward her, then snatched it back before she could tell whether he was about to hit her or pat her.

She padded to the fallen wolf. He was a big man, this leader, but not as big as Elijah. His lean body was still in the throes of a fight not to shift. He was a fighter, a strong, strong man. His back was broken, and cuts that went all the way to bone slashed across his body in hideous stripes.

He wore blood like a gruesome mask on his face. She couldn't tell if he had once been a handsome man.

“Get on with it,” Elijah said.

The wolves watched, and she could feel doubt flowing from them in waves. And something else. Hope. That they loved this torn and battered man was obvious.

She drew in a breath and went to work.

“What are you doing?” Elijah's voice was just below a yell. He looked down at her, his body as stiff as cardboard, hands fisted at his sides.

She ignored him. It wasn't like she could shift back every time he wanted to have a conversation. If he wanted his leader alive, she hadn't much time. Too bad she couldn't heal the human body. Her life might have been easier.

The gray wolf hovered but didn't get in her way. He seemed to trust her more than the others did. Or maybe he was just that desperate.

Kimberlyn the wolf began to lick the injured leader's wounds, and as she licked, her saliva closed wounds, repaired blood vessels, and sank deep within his body to heal bones and the fractured spine.

Her mind drifted. The sounds of the other wolves faded, as did awareness of her surroundings. Should someone wish to harm her, now would be a good time. With her thoughts fully engaged upon his wounds, she was as helpless as the man she healed. Her power eased out of her, cooing and crooning to his ills, coaxing them better, mending injuries like an old woman darning socks.

Time had no meaning; she had no idea how long it took her to heal his shattered body. As she neared the end of her work, her conscious mind began once more to awaken to the sounds around her.

Murmuring voices whispered on the cooling breeze like the rasping together of falling leaves. Fresh early-morning dew soothed her bruised throat as she dragged her mouth from the wolf, inhaling deeply.

Dazed, she looked up. The wolves, all in human form, stood in a circle, watching her. Mist danced and weaved around them, creating a picture of such rightness and beauty she might have cried had she not been in wolf form.

She staggered up and shook herself, wondering if she wasn't too fatigued to shift. She'd have to get home before she changed, or else she wouldn't make it. Nearly too exhausted to run, in human form she would simply have crashed where she stood.

The wolf whose life she'd saved slept a slumber of peace and not the near-coma sleep she'd found him in before she'd healed him. He'd be okay. He'd be better than okay. He needed to rest and repair his mind.

She backed away. His pack gathered around him, touching his body, shocked and awed by his obvious health. His body began to shift back to human form, and she fled.
